MUSC CARES Therapy Clinic

Every Tuesday night, after MUSC’s physical therapy gym closes for business, a new group of patients arrives – patients who might have no other way to see a therapist. For many, it’s what they need to get working, driving, even walking again.

Physical therapy, occupational therapy and weight management students run the non-profit CARES Therapy Clinic on volunteer time and welcome about 30 uninsured and under-insured people each week. Their service comes after a full day of school and often extends until 10 p.m. by the time they finish paperwork. But it spares some patients from a life of chronic pain or disability, and it saves the local community about $120,000 per year in avoided emergency room visits.
