Monica Kreber

Monica Kreber was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in October 1996. She was 7 years old at the time and in the first grade. There are many types of leukemia but ALL is most commonly found in children – it is also the most treatable. To fight her cancer Monica went through nearly three years of chemotherapy. She was treated at MUSC Children’s Hospital in Charleston, SC.

Less than a year into her treatment Monica’s dad, David, was approached by colleague and family friend, Bailey Williams, to start a golf tournament in Monica’s honor – not just to raise funds for cancer research, but to raise awareness as well. This year is the 21st Monica Kreber Golf Tournament. The money raised from the tournament goes back to MUSC for pediatric cancer research. Over the years the Kreber family has tried to network with other families of children who are facing cancer, inviting them to be a part of the golf tournament.

Today Monica is 27 years old. She works as a journalist in Summerville and enjoys spending time with her family – parents David and Sally and brothers Drew and Zach. Most importantly, she is healthy. The Krebers still hold out for hope that one day there will be a cure for cancer.
