There are currently more than 123,000 people waiting for life-saving organ transplants in the United States. Living donors are crucial to reducing these statistics. An organ from a living donor lasts twice as long and provides the highest quality at the lowest cost with the least amount of wait.
The Living Donor Institute began when a small group of transplant recipients and their families realized the need to support education and research in order to make a difference in the wait times, the costs, and the quality of life for those who need and receive transplants.
MUSC is the only Living Donor Transplant Center in South Carolina, where more than 800 organs have been donated by living donors since the program started. Our vision is to create a nationally-recognized program to serve as a leading resource for transplant patients and living donors through the pursuit of innovation. This event is another step towards making this goal a reality.
Every year MUSC serves millions of individuals, families, businesses, and communities with one overarching mission... improved health. It is not a finite goal, but an ever-evolving passion to be better than today. We will lead by example through education, collaboration and innovation to put our patients and their families at the center of a health care transformation that has an impact across our state...thereby changing what's possible nationally and globally.
