About Us
MUSC CARES Clinic
The MUSC CARES Clinic is a medical student-initiated and managed non-profit organization providing free medical care to the under-served, uninsured population of the Lowcountry. Since 2005 we have been providing free primary care to individuals without insurance entirely free of cost, and, with the help of many generous members of the Charleston community, we are hoping to maintain this philanthropic tradition of providing free healthcare alive. As a registered 501(c)-3 organization, we strive to raise money and awareness year-round for the health needs of our patients at our clinic in Mount Pleasant, SC.
The CARES Clinic serves as a primary care facility for most of its patients but also serves the need for those with emergency health issues. Additionally, the clinic now hosts several specialty nights such as Cardiology night, Psychiatry Night, Gynecology Night, and a Spanish Night. Without the clinic, many of our patients would not receive any medical care besides costly Emergency Room visits. Last year alone, CARES saw over 1000 patients with over 20% of patients indicating that they would have gone to the emergency room if CARES and their student volunteers were not there to support them. As we continue through our 16th year we look forward to bringing together volunteers from our student body and the medical community at large to unite in our continued effort to improve the lives of those without health insurance.
During the current pandemic we are continuing to care for our patients through virtual and in-person appointments. We have provided local children with 1,126 necessary vaccines for school, and continue to provide produce to 1048 families at our rural St. Stephen community. We're continuing to serve our community as best we can, but we need support more now than ever.
